In addition to feeding the bacteria inhabiting an aquarium’s substrate, it is also important not to overfeed! Excess food left in tank water will rot quickly and release ammonia into your system, causing increased toxicity levels that harm fish as well as bacteria inside of tanks. These high toxicity levels may require more frequent filter media changes than normal due to bacteria being killed off by higher amounts of toxins within tap water entering their environment.
Water Changes
Carry out regular partial changes on your tank, swapping out 10-25% of its volume each month. This will remove any bacteria and other impurities from the tank’s water column. Additionally, bacteria are unable to breed in new water, so it naturally limits bacteria growth.
Enzyme Cleaner
Purchase an enzyme-based bacteria eliminator that can break down organic matter into its basic elements for efficient use by plants or bacteria. Bacteria often feed on fish waste and excess food from overfeeding as well as dead plant material decaying within the tank’s environment.
