Tiger Milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerus) is a type of mushroom that is valued for its medicinal properties. It is consumed in traditional medicine as a tonic for good health. The mushroom is endemic to tropical rainforests found in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, some parts of Australia, and South China. It is so valued for its many uses that it is considered a national treasure in Malaysia.
The earliest report regarding the use of Tiger Milk mushroom appeared in the 1664 “The Diary of John Evelyn”. Originally called Lac Tygridis (tiger’s milk), the mushroom was used for the treatment of diseases that European doctors then could not cure. It took its name from folklore in which the mushroom grew on a spot on which a tigress’ milk dripped.
If the Tiger Milk mushroom may seem unfamiliar to some people, it is because it is quite difficult to find. People have to scour the deep tropical jungles to find it because it only grows in conditions that are ideal for its type. The mushroom also does not grow in clumps or clusters – it grows in solitary stalks. Once a stalk grows at a certain spot, it is not likely that another stalk will be found within a 5km-radius.
Another reason why usable Tiger Milk mushroom is so rare is that its healing properties are found in its sclerotium or underground tuber. Once it produces the cap and stem, its active compounds may have already been significantly depleted. Its environment is also being threatened due to deforestation. It is often sold by weight or by stalk, and the price tag, suffice it to say, is not cheap.
Benefits of Tiger Milk Mushroom
Once it is harvested, Tiger Milk mushroom is often grated or ground and prepared as a tonic. Sometimes, the fungus is ground and applied directly to the area of the body that is diseased. It is also sometimes sliced into small pieces and eaten raw.
Benefits of Tiger Milk Mushroom
Antioxidant
Tiger Milk mushroom has shown efficacy in neutralizing the effects of certain types of free radicals. This action helps prevent oxidative stress and can help reduce the risks associated with lung infections.
Immunomodulating Effects
Tiger Milk mushroom can boost the body’s immune system to help recognize and fight off foreign substances. The body enjoys better, stronger immunity against common respiratory disorders as a result of exposure to certain types of bacteria and viruses.
Antiproliferative Effects
Tiger Milk mushroom is capable of inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, specifically certain types of lung and breast cancer cells. It does not have adverse effects on healthy cells, making it a promising subject of further study in the fight against cancer.
