It’s true: global executive recruiters yield a lot of power. Their mission is to supply leading companies with top notch top brass. This is not an easy job to do.
However, global executive recruiters often have everything they need at their disposal. That is, in addition to getting paid big bucks. Because of all these endowments, they are expected to walk the talk. In other words, to attract the world’s best executive talent, worldwide HR personnel need to look good, shiny, and blemish free.
And this is where opposite poles do not attract. In the global front, hirers and their hirees are mirror images of each other. This is why it’s hard to lie to the recruiter about your qualifications. Unless you’re a con artist or a hustler, you shouldn’t make up your resume or bio for presentation to jet setting recruiters.
If you do, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be found out. And by then your hire status will already be in jeopardy. There’s a reason why they look and talk like you. They’re detectives in disguise.
They can smell a rat or spot a phony a mile away. It’s their job so they’re well trained for it. Unless you can falsify documents like a secret agent or international spy, it’s far better to avoid lying to the recruiter.
In this business, there are two kinds. There’s the hiring agent who’s an employee of the company. And then there’s one who has no singular loyalty to one firm or corporation.
The latter is like a gun for hire. Which means that once he or she has the job candidate hired, there’s a nice commission waiting at the end of the bargaining table. And don’t forget, this commission is based on how much money the agent saved for the hiring company.
Therein lies a great difference. The latter can be more lax with your qualifications. After all, he or she will want to get more people hired since his her overall income depends on it.
Consider yourself as a fish in a very big lake. The bigger the haul, the happier the fisherman gets. This is but one aspect of the psychology behind hiring.
Another is that first impressions really last. There’s no joke about it. So use it well to your advantage.
Lastly, never, never think that recruitment is out to disqualify you. If you think this way, you will never get hired. Recruiters need to hire someone. Don’t make it difficult for them.
