Some mothers start weaning when their maternity leave ends while others wait until their babies reach the toddler stage. You may choose the time to wean or you could let your little one lead the process. Every child is unique and will take weaning differently. While some infants accept easily and enjoy new foods, some are quite reluctant to quit breastfeeding. They can even refuse the bottle or any other alternative methods of feeding, making the transition to a weaned child a frustrating experience.
It is Okay to Extend
Generally, babies should enjoy mama’s milk for at least six months since birth. It is also recommended to extend nursing even after the baby starts taking solid food. Some children enjoy breast milk for two years, which is good. As a mother, choose when to wean and don’t allow anyone to pressure you. Examine your reasons for weaning and make sure they are about you and your baby. Sometimes you want to start pulling the plug but the baby is not ready. Change your mind and try another time.
Dealing With Postpartum Depression (PPD)
PDD is real and you should always watch out for signs of emotional trauma. There are instances of women who fall into PPD once the baby gets off the breast. This could be linked to a reduced production of the oxytocin hormone when a mom stops nursing. It may cause hormonal imbalance and a change in mood, characterized by confusion, exhaustion, and depression. Some women feel like their parenting phase has ended while others suffer from a lack of physical attachment to their babies.
Dealing With Weaning-Related Conditions
Ailments such as mastitis may hit hard right after weaning. It is caused by a blocked duct when your breasts are still producing milk but it doesn’t find the way out. Be careful not to wean abruptly as the whole process can be extremely painful. Signs of mastitis include high fever, reddening of the breast, and pain. The infection requires antibiotic treatment as soon as possible. You can allow the baby to breastfeed to let the excess milk out. Another treatment method is the use of cold cabbage leaves on the bra to ease the pain.
Having a weaned child doesn’t necessarily mean the end of sleep deprivation that many new moms face. Neither does it mean you don’t love your baby, so there’s nothing to feel guilty of. Never stop breastfeeding because of some myths you’ve heard or after listening to other mom’s opinions. It should be a personal decision.
