There are many reasons to walk a horse, but these animals can be disrespectful at times. You can never trust an animal fully and so you need to practice safe hand-walking because it is probably a routine exercise. When it rains, tie rings and paddocks may not be safe and so you might need to take the horse out. Properly Working Accessories
For the headcollar and leadrope , ensure they are in good working order. An efficient headcollar offers a balance so you can handle the mare safely. It should release in case the animal misbehaves. Headcollar testing is the only way to let you know whether it’s safe. If it fails to release, there’s a possibility to injure the horse’s head or nearby structures. It could also cause anxiety that would further damage your horse. Check if the lead rope’s snaps have frayed- forget mending with duct tape as it can fail, and shop for a new one instead.
Keep a Whip Close by
If you have to, it’s okay to use a whip e.g. when the horse becomes unruly. You should carry with the left hand. The last thing you want is the horse to jump ahead of you. Carrying a whip even if you don’t use it will help to keep the horse under control.
Turn Clockwise, Always
Turning right is a good strategy to remind the horse to never run into you but away from you. Walk around it and press against its body to exert more control. If he refuses to move or pulls back, sharply turn him to one side and pull forward.
Wear Gloves
Gloves help with preventing farmer’s tan and protect your palms and fingers from minor injuries. Sometimes, the horse yanks the lead rope from your hands and you will need to safeguard your fingers from breaking.

And don’t hesitate to use verbal communication such as commending the horse when they walk well. It makes the trip more enjoyable. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Nobody can judge you for requesting a hand but people might make fun of you if you are dragged around.
