By setting up a system that will not allow any messages to remain in the account after a certain amount of time has passed, a spammer will be unable to send any more messages.
It is also advisable not to use your emails in the public domain. Likewise, you should make sure that you change your e-mail inbox security (passwords, secret questions, etc.) every few months.
