Have you been dreaming of owning a radio station one day and have an idea of what to broadcast but do not know what radio broadcasting equipment you need? It is overwhelming to know every gear and understand how it works and fits into the air chain.
Below is a list of equipment you will find in a typical radio station.
1. Audio Console
Also known as a radio panel, an audio console is the heart of the studio. It is what a radio presenter uses to regulate what is heard on air. It is different and more expensive than the regular PA audio console since it is custom-built for the studio.
2. On Air Light
How do you know your mic is live? There is an ”On Air” Light designed for that. The light is turned on or off by the radio audio console once the microphone channel is turned on. Ideally, you should have at least one light in the studio and one outside.
3. Computer
A computer is the most basic equipment in any radio studio. Computers come in different sizes and shapes. They perform numerous broadcast functions such as:
• Routing control
• File sharing
• Audio logging
• Music scheduling
• Automation or playout system
• Dead air detection
Due to noise and heat in a studio, it is wise to keep all computers in a rack room and spread out their control using KVM extenders.
4. KVM Extenders
A KVM extender allows remote control and access of a PC’s mouse, keyboard, and video output. There are IP-enabled Keyword/Video/Mouse Extenders that match network routers and switches.
5. Microphone
A microphone captures sound from the sound and then turns it into electrical impulses. Unlike PA microphones, broadcast microphones do not have feedback issues.
6. Microphone Arm
A microphone arm is a special arm that keeps studio microphones at the right height. It extends above the audio console, computers and other equipment creating enough table space.
7. Mix Engine
If you have a digital radio audio console, you need a mix engine to mix and process your audio. Modern mix engines have two plugs: power and network. Since digital control protocols are trademarked, it is advisable to buy your Mix Engine and Audio Console from the same manufacturer.
With much said and done, the above list of radio broadcasting equipment provides basic tools that you need to host and manage your radio station. Well, these are not the only equipment that you will need for your studio, so carry more research on more tools that will make your studio run optimally. All the best!
